Forest Friday

#ForestFriday - Where the trees are skyscrapers and life is simpler

Today we go to the Northwestern part of this great land to a place called the Olympic Peninsula. These particular photos are from the trail to Pony Bridge from Graves Creek Campground. I recently did Hike 29 out there and, as usual, can’t stop thinking about going back. Enjoy the escape to the forest and have a great weekend if you can!

#ForestFriday - Wishing for snow!

Cooler weather has FINALLY arrived here in Texas and it has my brain thinking beyond fall and into winter. I also know, some places already have snow, and I’m jealous. Anyway, here are some photos from the forest in Northern Michigan around my grandparent’s house. Not quite the wild and free mountain forests, but the forests I grew up exploring! (November 2007)

#ForestFriday - TGIFF!

Thank goodness it’s Forest Friday!

The photo I’m sharing is from when I was working on location, during one of the recent weeks away from home. When doing my field work, I often find myself on these narrow back roads and it is one part of the job I do not mind at all. Take a minute to find something you love and focus on that today!

#ForestFriday - Kenai Lake

Today, in photos anyway, I’m heading back to Alaska to Kenai Lake. We camped here for one night last June on our family adventure around Alaska. Enjoy some photos and the escape back to the forest. I hope you get outside this weekend!

#ForestFriday - Sable Falls (Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore)

Forest Friday 9_7_18.jpg

Sable Falls is located in the wonderful Upper Peninsula of Michigan within the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore site. You take a short hike to a bunch of stairs and then there's a gorgeous waterfall. Along the trail, you can see Lake Superior just above the trees. I first saw this place on a 2001 road trip around Lake Superior with my grandparents and it's been one of my favorites ever since.

Here are some shots from both fall and winter, my favorite seasons, so you can get the full experience.

I hope you find yourself in a forest this weekend!

#ForestFriday - Little Susitna River

Forest Friday 8.31.18.jpg

On our last day in Alaska, after getting home from the 10 day camping trip, my other half and I made a quick little trip to this area by ourselves just to get away. This river flows through the Hatcher Pass Public Use Area and there is nothing nicer than a river flowing through the trees. I hope you get out and enjoy the forest this weekend!

#ForestFriday - the Ozette Loop

Earlier this year I was lucky enough to visit Olympic National Park up in NW Washington. I was referred to the Ozette Triangle because it is a spectacular trail with a mix of forest and beach hiking that gives you the perfect mix.  It is about a 9 mile trail that can be done in one day as I did or one that can be done with an overnight stay along the beach, just get a permit.  Here are a few photos from the forest portion.  Happy (Forest) Friday and I hope you can get out this weekend - I know I'm going to try!

#ForestFriday - Ossagon Trail (Redwood NP)

Forest Friday - 8_17_18.jpg

Today's Forest Friday is going to look at a trail I walked on 10 years ago vs. 1 year ago.  Ossagon Trail is Redwood National & State Parks with the Prairie Creek State Park area.  When I was looking through the photos I noticed a few things... Anyway, enjoy the forest and I hope you get outside this weekend if you want!

#ForestFriday - Santa Fe National Forest (special repeat)

I recently did a tribute to the Santa Fe National Forest for Forest Friday, but here's another because it's fresh off the brain from our recent trip.  Here are a few views from our campsite, from the evening.  Enjoy and I hope you can find the forest this weekend!

#ForestFriday - Hoh Rain Forest

Forest Friday - 7_27_18 (1).jpg

When I visited this area of Olympic National Park in March, I had sunny skies and mild temperatures.  With my limited time, I opted to walk the Hall of Mosses trail and a little of the Hoh River trail.  The drive in and out of the Hoh Rain Forest was a real treat, following the river with little openings exposing the mountains in the background.  Enjoy the mosses, ferns, and trees from my quick, but beautiful trip.

The forested mountains peak through each break in the trees along the road in and out.

The water is so clear, everyone was standing around in amazement.

#ForestFriday - Santa Fe National Forest

A year ago this week, my other half and I visited the Santa Fe National forest in New Mexico.  The city of Santa Fe is a colorful desert town, but the National Forest is burst of green trees and mountains on a completely different level.  We stayed at the Holy Ghost Campground and explored around that area.  Here are some photos of the forest to enjoy!

#ForestFriday - Fall in the U.P.

I've got fall on the brain, because summer is already dragging on. So, for today's "Forest Friday" feature, I'm throwing it back to October of 2008 when two of my friends and I went on a little road trip to Copper Harbor in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.  Not all of the photos are from Copper Harbor, some are from the ride up and various other places throughout the Upper Peninsula.  Take a break and drift off into the fall colors, imagine the smell of the leaves, and feel the cool breeze... is it working?  Have a good weekend!

#ForestFriday - Michigan's Upper Peninsula

This week, I'm sharing some photos you may have already viewed over on my Hike 20 post from my recent trip to Michigan.  I don't care if it's a cop out, the forest was gorgeous and quiet and deserves to be shared again.

Tahquamenon Falls State Park is about a 2.5-3 hour drive north of my hometown, where I stay when visiting.  It was a warm morning, and the sun illuminated the lower levels, highlighting the ferns and mosses with a beautiful glow.  Everything was green and vibrant, making it feel so alive.

Happy Friday, enjoy the weekend ahead, and enjoy the forest photos.

#ForestFriday - Cape Flattery

"Walking through the forest on the west coast will always be a treat to me"

Today I'm looking back on a 2009 trip to the northwest tip of the contiguous US.  Two of my best friends and I were on one of our cross-country road trips and decided we needed to see Cape Flattery - if for no other reason than to say we went to one of the most northwest tips of the US.  The forest was lovely, as forests are, but I can still remember being amazed by the turquoise water crashing on the rocks below more than anything else.  I've attached a few photos of the trail and the views.

To park in the lot with the trailhead, you need to obtain a permit from the Makah Reservation.  I've included a link to get more information about where to find that pass and a little background on the Makah Tribe.

#ForestFriday - Special Edition

It's been a little while since I've made a post, mostly because I've been lazy but also because I've been doing other things.  Anyway.  This edition of Forest Friday is a few highlights from a very brief trip to Sequoia/Kings Canyon last August.  Enjoy and may the forest be with you.

#ForestFriday - Tyler State Park (Texas)

Today's Forest Friday post features the pine forests of Tyler, TX.  I'm thankful Texas has such gorgeous pine forests for me to hike through and enjoy.  I love the tall pines so much, I am planning to head back very soon for an early morning hike.  Enjoy a few photos and may the forest be with you, always.

#ForestFriday - The Greenbelt in Austin, TX

To any Austin, TX resident or visitor, the Barton Creek Greenbelt is a definite source for cooling off in the summer and exercising any time of year!  Here are some photos from my various visits to parts of the Greenbelt over the years.  Urban forests deserve all the love too!  Go love the trees and make sure you take care of your urban green spaces.

**Unfortunately, some people can't respect the urban trees and they take abuse like this graffiti
